Keep Your Patients Safe Long After Drug Take Back Day

Did you know that nearly 9 out of 10 consumers keep their unused opioid prescriptions for future use? This statistic found in a recent poll indicates the need for more education around the importance of and best practices for safe storage and disposal of prescriptions, especially opioids. That's why RIPA, in collaboration with our regional quality improvement organization, has developed a tool to help pharmacists educate patients about how they can dispose of their prescription drugs in a safe, convenient and responsible way: medication disposal cards. Click here to share this tool with your patients. This is an opportunity to engage with patients about proper medication disposal not only on National Drug Take Back Day (April 28), but also every day throughout the year. After sharing the medication disposal cards with your patients, we want to hear from you. In an effort to gauge the effectiveness of this tool, please keep track of how often you used the cards and how useful you found them. Stay tuned for a three-question survey after April 28.
