Rhode Island Uniform Controlled Substance Act
Changes Effective September 1, 2009
The RI Uniform Controlled Substance Act was amended to include revisions that took effect on 9-1-09. The newly amended language can be found in RI Statute Chapter 21-28 Section 3-18. Changes were made to both the dispensing amounts of Controlled Substances as well as the allowance of prescribers writing multiple CII Prescriptions. The new language is as follows:
"In prescribing controlled substances in Schedule II, practitioners may write up to three separate prescriptions, each for a one-month supply, signed and dated on the date written with directions to the pharmacist to fill no earlier than the date specified on the face of the prescription."
Previous language allowing the dispensing of a 60 days supply of Amphetamines was removed. It is now recommended that prescribers follow the multiple prescription parameters when prescribing more than one month of medications.
